PGA Tour 96

They saved the worst for last

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1995

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Woah what happened here? EA actually changed the core game which had not changed since the original. And not for the better, unfortunately. Undoubtedly the most unforgiving controls in a golf game. I'm calling this unplayable fire to the bizarre movement of the cursor. It moves too quickly and speeds up and slows down at unexpected times. So it's impossible to time your hits where you want them to go. It's also not labeled with 25 50 75% so it's hard to know where to touch it anyway. Gone is the overhead view where you can easily place your aim. And putting is ridiculous. It's impossible to tell the slope of the green.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Lots of modes including Tournament, Skins, Match, and something called Shoot-out. I didn't play that cuz I don't care and it requires 4 players. 8 courses so lots of holes to play I guess.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

It's another stuffy golf game, but EA Sports went all out and you've got 20 seconds of unskippable title screens. Then a bunch of menus to get thru. Not a plug and play sports game.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Huge step into the abyss. The prerendered sprites look even worse here but then we also get polygonal courses which take about 10 seconds to load in, one polygon at a time. Ambitious, but incredibly ugly and distracting.
