Phalanx

Don't let the Banjo Man fool you

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Kemko

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Setup similar to Axelay - collect and switch between 3 weapons and three bars of health. Use a weapon as a super bomb to spend it which opens a slot to collect a new one. 3 speed levels which can be selected on the fly. Programmable buttons. Very good controls. Minimal slowdown by SNES standards

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Level 2 is underwater with enemies like Darius Twin Level 3 is a cave that reminds me of R-Type or UN Squadron cave levels Lots of variety.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Generic space shmup Little anime picture is an intro before each stage

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Mostly brown pallette. Looks a bit like a Genesis game. Lots of parallax and some interesting enemy designs.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Some decent songs. The sounds and music are reminiscent of Konami music of the time. I was bopping my head more often than not.

Overall Score: 70
