Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium

Easily the best RPG on the Genesis

Gameplay

A number of welcome improvements:
- target individual enemies in battle
- predefined "macros"
- shared inventory
- improved menus
I still hate that pressing C to inspect brings up a text box if you aren't next to someone or something. Every time you do this the main character ironically states "Stop wasting time, there's nothing here!" Umm, thanks for wasting my time to tell me that.

Level Design

Fast paced storyline takes you from town to town in rapid succession and within an hour you've got a party of four. Great pacing.
Requires a lot of grinding but not as bad as PS2.

Theme

Really cool manga style panels appear during cutscenes to tell the story. Love the storyline as well. It seems to pick up right where the previous games left off.

Art Style

The overworld sprites go back to the small, tall, lean artwork in PS2. Not my favorite, but they're ok. The battles are fully realized this time around. Finally! You can see your characters at the bottom of the screen and full animations play as you attack and are attacked. Good stuff.
Enemy sprites are big and well designed and drawn, as usual.

Audio

I was enjoying the music until I got into a boss battle. It sounded bored of itself, and I agreed with it.
Besides that nitpick, the music is a vast improvement over PS2 and 3. The componsition is good, although less up-beat than PS3, and this time around the composer used more sounds than the harsh organ pipe. Brilliant!
