Peek a Boo Shooter

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Huge hitbox Powerup shot ala R-Type Options ala Gradius Very few powerups. They give you a ton of Speed Up but few weapons. Weapons seem to expire after only a minute or two. Enemies swarm to your position rather than following a pattern. Ridiculous difficulty

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Stages are broken into two segments - one flying high and another down low to the ground. They operate the same but breaking up the level is nice. Every level has a unique set of enemies but the level basically consists of a continuous steam of the same waves over and over again. Some variety between but not within stages. Some levels make enemies come from behind. You have no way to attack them. Horrible design choice. Level 3 is nigh unplayable because of this.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Major fan service. After each level you see your princess chained up and showing some serious cleavage. It's basically Peek a Boo Poker but as a shoot em up. The Greek setting is unique. Well besides Legendary Wings.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Multiple levels of parallax scrolling Sprites are mostly ugly but backgrounds are ok. Looks like a late 80s arcade title.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Horrible voice samples Music is an annoying and repetitive series of swoops and noises. I think the composer was going for atmospheric but achieved annoying instead.

Overall Score: 43
