Pilotwings
Don't call it a tech demoGenre: simulation - flight
Publisher: Nintendo
Year: 1991
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Controls are squirrely but makes sense once you get used to them. Wonderful sense of height and speed, especially when compared to other flight sims on the SNES. Flying the bi-plane is a true joy. The hang glider is difficult to land but fun to fly around. Likewise the rocket pack is a pain to land but is quite fun. I'm not a big fan of the skydiving event but the sense of height is impressive.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
6 distinct events - 2 are hidden mini games Difficulty ramps up quickly and the events are the same every time, but you can just mess around to create your own replay value.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
It's mostly a tech demo, but has that signature Nintendo-feel to it. The reactions (both good and bad) of the flight instructions are priceless.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Impressive use of Mode 7. This and F-Zero set the template which all other SNES titles had to reach for. No discernable slowdown either.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Much of the music is pleasant, peaceful, and well-composed. Then there's the rocketpack "music". Overall this game is as much fun to listen to as it is to play, but man is that rocketpack song the worst.
Overall Score: 80
