Pirates! Gold for Genesis

Pirates! Gold

Charted Waters

Genre: rpg - western

Publisher: MicroProse

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Sail around the Caribbean in an overhead view. Controls are laggy but not terrible. Naval battles use same view and control as navigation with very laggy and infrequent gum shots. It would've been nice to know when you can shoot instead of having to mash. Deuling is similar to Prince of Persia. I don't get it. Better than a sum of its parts. Fun experience.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Tons of things to do. I could see playing this all the way through. A handful of historical scenarios plus an open world campaign.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Pirates of the Caribbean. Cartoony presentation. Looks and feels playful.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Minimal animation, except when walking around a town. Great use of color and some details such as clouds and water. Menus look very grainy. Attractive but not impressive.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Lovely pleasant music. Sound effects are infrequent but equally nice on the ears.

Overall Score: 68
