Power Golf for TurboGrafx-16

Power Golf

Can't aim or shoot. But everything else is great!

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1989

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Golf is a simple video game experience. There are only a few interactive elements, namely selecting a club, aiming your shot, and hitting the ball. Unfortunately, this game does all three horribly. When selecting a club it doesn't tell you how far your shot will go. Trial and error I suppose. Aiming the shot is terribly imprecise. The cursor only moves after 4 adjustments in any direction. In other words, you can make 4 micro corrections before the game let's you know that you've done something. So stupid. Finally, hitting the ball is nearly impossible because the cursor zips around at supersonic speed.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Match, stroke, and tournament modes. Nothing much to complain here. I like that it lets you jump right into a match. However, the game is so broken that I can't praise the design and further.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I like the minimalistic presentation. This is what video game sports should feel like

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Again, it's minimal but it does the medium well. I'd much rather have a clean overhead view instead of an ambitious but disappointing 3D monstrosity like so many of the EA golf games.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

A nice song plays while you do. Good stuff
