R-Type III The Third Lightning
Good, not greatGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Irem
Year: 1994
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
I hemmed and hawed over this rating. The lack of difficult levels is a big deal here. The game is brutally difficult and without a way to dial down the difficult it's even more daunting to think about playing. They at least added midlevel spawn points.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Levels feel more crowded and busy. Sometimes in a good way, and other times in an annoying way. Oh and stage 2 is just plain stupid. Its built around two things I hate - water drops that kill you and extremely tight spaces. The boss fight is horrible. Stage 4 isn't much better. Going slooooowly into a huge ship then backing slooooowly back out is not my idea of fun.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
R-Type was the king and it knew it. The opening cutscene is badass despite the fact that there's no story to speak of. Great presentation
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Impressive effects and use of mode 7 for rotation the environment and huge sprites and backgrounds. How is this on the SNES?
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
The music is the same or maybe a bit better than Super R-Type but the sound design takes a step back. Still good, but not great.
Overall Score: 72
