Road Rash for Genesis

Road Rash

Fast and Furious on bikes

Genre: racing - vehicle combat

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Extremely forgiving controls. Way to take all the turns and stay focused on passing other racers. Love it. Punching and kicking opponents is fun if unnecessary. You always start at the back of the pack and have to get to the front. Once you're in the front it's less fun. This game is much easier than its sequels but still a good time.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The tracks have lots of hills and long turns and various obstacles and cars to avoid. They're set in various locales across the country, which is fun. The artwork varies greatly between these levels. So while there's not a lot of variety in the gameplay or levels, there's enough to keep your interest.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The theme of the game is simple enough. It's street racing on motorcycles where the object is to finish first and earn money to buy a better bike. The best thing about the setting of the game is that all the other racers have a name and a bit of a personality on how they drive and attack you. Before races a few of them like Natasha or Slater will give you some advice.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The sprites look decent, although all opponents are the same sprite. There aren't even any color swaps. The track and background items and characters move quickly but animate extremely poorly. The frame rate is extremely low.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is fun. It has a nice fast beat to it. In all honesty it doesn't actually sound very good but it fits the the theme well. He kind of sounds like somebody playing one of those tall drums with wooden sticks. It's just a real unique sound to it.
