Ristar
Not all grabby stars are creepyGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1995
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Typical Treasure - responsive controls that are hampered with an innovative but awkward movement mechanic. In this case it's extendable arms which grab and attack or move your character. It's fine once you get the hang of it, but it's always a little weird, like the dash in Sparkster or the shake, shake in Mischief Makers. Everything else is just peachy. Very simple controls and the game plays butter smooth.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Levels are cleverly designed to test your ability to use the grab mechanic. Unfortunately, since it's pretty much the only mechanic the levels start to become samey after a while. They're interesting, but not super memorable.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Excellent presentiation, but the whole things comes across as a discount Kirby. It's good, but doesn't stand out amongst all the platformers.
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Wow. Easily some of the best graphics on the system. Incredible artwork, animation, and effects. Stunning
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Fun, bouncy music. Great stuff. The only knock are the repetitive sounds which play unnecessarily. Like sometimes a little tinkling sound plays when you land a jump. It doesn't do or mean anything, so why does it play?
