Risky Woods
Stupid Ghouls n GhostsGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Year: 1992
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Blatant ripoff of Ghouls n Ghosts with Western gameplay and level design. Prepare yourself for poor platforming, inconsistent hit detection, infinitely spawning enemies that swarm you, an unreadable HUD, a short timer, and weird controls. The controls include having to press down to duck in order to collect the treasure that enemies drop. There's also a weird gate ystme where you gather a wheel, place it in a statue and play Simon the memory game to make it explode. Half of the pickups kill you in one shot and a few times these appeared in the same spot as a required pickup but when I tried to pick up the required thing I was killed. Brilliant. The controls are actually fairly responsive so it's a shame the other aspects of the game are so frustrating.
Level Design Score: 0
Level Design Notes:
I can't get past the first screen. Enemies continuously score cheap, unavoidable hits. Endless pits are everywhere which enemies knock you into. I got to the end of the level and was told I didn't collect all the souls. Then I was shown the game over screen. What the heck are the souls? Where are they? Argh. Typical stupid Amiga level design.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You're a Greek toga wearing guy fighting skeletons. I'm getting major Clash of the Titans vibes. But it's an Amiga port.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
One of the better looking Amiga port. Still not a style that I like, but the artwork is at least well done
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Fun music which doesn't fit the theme in any way shape or form. The bouncy sound effects also don't belong in a sword and sandal game.
Overall Score: 34
