Review #4484

RoboCop versus The Terminator

The best Robocop game. Also the best Terminator game.

Gameplay

Decent controls, if a little stiff. But that's Robocop I guess. Massive improvement over all other Robocop or Terminator games I've played.
No ammo to worry about thank goodness.
Can move and shoot at the same time!
You're a very tall, huge target so it's difficult to avoid taking damage.
Basically a slow Contra with huge sprites.
Nice camera gives you 60% draw distance with a slight snapback when you change direction. Well done.

Level Design

Objective is to go right but there is some verticality with ladders and zip lines that you travel on quickly. Not terribly interesting. Everything feels very samey. The gameplay is the highlight.
The environment has some destructible elements that give weapons and health drops, which are plentiful.
No time limit.

Theme

Love it. Two franchises with a retconned tie-in between them.
Great comic book presentation

Art Style

Dark graphics
Decent sprites but very minimal animation.
Enemies explode into a huge burst of blood. Yaknow, as people do. It's very gory.
The levels have distinct looks but again they're all very dark and samey within the level. There aren't any unique or interesting set pieces.

Audio

Unmemorable. the music is a heavy beat and includes some weird voice samples of a guy grunting or saying something like "yeah". The gun sounds are impactful but there are virtually no other sounds. Enemies or bosses don't even make sounds. It's offputting.
