Sagaia for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Sagaia

Sharks with frickin lasers

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Classic Darius gameplay Pick up a shield and hold down both a and b to shoot missiles and a normal shot. Power ups lightly upgrade these two shots but add other shots like a vertical laser. Good stuff Thankfully, enemies go down pretty quickly, unlike other Darius games.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Levels are filled to the brim with enemies and environmental obstacles. It's the environmental stuff that gives the levels character and provides most of the challenge. Like all other Darius games There are branching pads after each level which gives the game way more replayability than most shooters. There are total of 22 levels!

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I've always enjoyed the bioorganic and underwater creature theme of the Darius series.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The sprite work in the scheme is good but the backgrounds aren't as interesting as I would like. There are a few levels with interesting effects in the background but others are very static like zone B for example. Also, the colors seem muted and dark.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Oy vay. The sounds of your shot and missiles are soooo annoying. The missiles sound like squarely mice while the shot sounds like popping three bubble wrap bubbles in rapid succession. And these sounds are so loud!

Overall Score: 72
