Skeleton Krew

Battle in Monstrocity

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Core Design

Year: 1995

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Isometric view that is committed to that view. Interesting mechanic - hold on attack to continuously shoot and A and C rotate left or right. Works ok but not intuitive. Rotation is very slow. Enemies take multiple hits. Typical Western dev stuff. Awkward controls. Switch between two weapons - gun and grenades. Hard to avoid enemies and damage. Works but just not much fun. Weird hit detection. Some weapons and enemies have verticality but you can't hit them when they have gone up or down. Hard to tell if you're damaging enemies. There's no dodge, roll, or any other interesting mechanic.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

First level is a small maze. Level 2 is an annoying long elevator ride while standing in an algae filled hot tub. Level 3 is some sort of Alien-esque base with vertical platforms. There's some variety but not interesting. You still just use the same controls over and over.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Laughable edgy motif. You're one of three monsters - rib, spine, or joint. Feels like a KISS movie. Skulls and bones are all over the place. Not my cup of tea. Green gore appears when enemies die.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Ok some people may like this games style but I find it awful. Everything is either red, black, brown, orange, or puke green. It's very Halloweeny. Technically impressive but butt ugly. Literally. Rib is wearing leotards which really highlight his butt cheeks. My wife says he looks like a zombie Cruella DeVille

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

Hooooorrrible music. Some of the worst I've ever heard. Everything about it is terrible. It's going for atmospheric but is just repetitive series of ugly sounds. Sounds are equally bad.
