Road rash meets the opening scene from Back to the Future

Genre: racing - vehicle combat

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Remember when Marty McFly grabbed the bumper of the Jeep at the start of back to the Future? That's the premise behind this game. The gameplay is basically Road Rash on skates. Your only means of accelerating is to grab the bumper of a car and then let go to accelerate past it and hopefully grab another bumper. I'm not sure why anyone would make a racing game that uses that mechanic. You can punch other racers but it would take probably 30 hits to get their energy low enough for them to fall over or die or something. So I don't know what the purpose of punching them is. You can also jump off of ramps but it's possible to land you always crash. So again, I don't know what the purpose of this is. Three people pop up and give you a score of how awesome you're tricks were when you jumped.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Frankly, I don't have any interest to find out what is different in different levels. I imagine it's all a bunch of the same things. Just go straight. The weird thing is that all the cars are driving on the left side of the road. The first level is set in Canada so I don't know why they're driving on the wrong side.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

90s 'tude. Painful to see. When you lose it proudly proclaims "Player is a loser." Pre race commentary from a supposed former champion is so EA but also so dumb for a game like this.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Like a bad version of Road Rash. Terrible frame rate. The artwork itself is not good. All other racers look the same. The cars I guess look all right but nothing else is worth admiring in this game.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

Horrible punkish music. Sounds are either non-existent or don't match what's happening on screen at all

Overall Score: 27
