Space MegaForce

The best SNES shoot em up

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Toho, Ltd

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 5

Gameplay Notes:

Perfect controls for a shooter. You've got adjustable speed, tons of powerups, responsive controls, screen filling weapons, and an immensely fair health and death system. The health system is quite interesting - you collect golden eggs which power up your weapon to a max of 7. Taking a hit knocks this down 3 or 4 levels or you die if you're on level 1. This game rocks! Oh and did I mention that there are tons of enemies with no slowdown? Compile were wizards.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Inventive, fun, and memorable level design. The second level is a descent onto the surface of a space station and then traversing the surface by scrolling forward, back, diagonally and every other direction. I've never experienced anything quite like it. Levels are looong! Makes for an intense experience

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Typical space shooter. No story whatsoever. There's an opening cutscene but it's just a handful of still images showing what I assume is an alien invasion.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Impressive visuals with NO SLOWDOWN! Layers of parallax scrolling. Detailed backgrounds that are interesting but not distracting. Every level looks different as well.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Good stuff
