Spanky's Quest

Bubble......[long pause]......bobble

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Natsume

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Bubble Bobble clone Toss a tiny bubble up and away from you. Press throw button again to turn it into a baseball. Incredibly difficult to hit enemies as the trajectory of the bubble/ball is extremely slow and arching. So gameplay is generally to find a safe spot and wait for an enemy to creep into range and hit it with a perfectly timed toss. If you miss (and you will often) you have to wait and wait for the enemy to come back. One of the slowest moving games I can remember playing. Control of your character is slow but otherwise tight.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

I only had the patience and the time to see 7 levels. They're all a one-screen affair. Just grab the required number of keys and go to the exit.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Playing Spanky feels dirtier than playing Ballz. The unskippable cut scene to start the game is a bit much, imo I had high hopes based on the artwork but the gameplay let's Spanky down.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Simple but attractive graphics.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Cute catchy tune, although it doesn't change from level to level so it gets old.

Overall Score: 35
