Spawn for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Spawn

Almost good

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Acclaim

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Four attack buttons plus jumping kicks and punches. Doesn't lack for attack variety although there's no projectile attack so I guess it does lack. Attacking enemies feels satisfying. Enemies come one at a time and there are only a handful of enemy types so the gameplay becomes boring quickly. Controls are responsive with very quick attacks but the jumping and other movement is quite slow. So yeah it's a mixed bag.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Some cool ideas like a crosshairs chasing you as you do a climb using wall jumps. I debated whether this was a 2D beat-em-up or an Action platformer but there's enough platforming that I went with the latter. I wish the combat were a bit deeper. The levels are also well designed but nice slowly with enemies coming one at a time so they're rather boring.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Spawn is a cool comic book character. The presentation is good but the story is not very engaging. Kids are being kidnapped and Spawn wants to find them. Not exactly a strong hook.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The sprites and character models are amazing and a few special effects are very nice, like the helicopter spotlight in stage 1 and the crosshairs in stage 2. However the background are boring black backdrops so I'm taking a point off.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nice music and sounds. Punches hit hard and the music gets you pumping. Not great but very good stuff

Overall Score: 65
