Splatterhouse 2 for Genesis

Splatterhouse 2

More Gore

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Most of the same warts that plague other games in the genre - very slow movement, laggy controls, short range on attacks, no directional correction during a jump, short jump. Let's just say you're not a nimble monster. The only real fun to be had here is the satisfaction of smashing a zombie into the background with a 2x4, but sadly that rarely happens. In five levels I only picked up a weapon twice and it forced me to drop the item after about 1/3rd of the level. Other than those two weapons (a 2x4 and a bone) there are no pwerups, health pickups, or anything else to find or do.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Go to the right. Kill enemies who amble toward you and jump over the rare obstacle. Time your hits just right to avoid taking damage. The levels look great but there's no variety whatsoever.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Gore! Gore! Gore! This game is undeniably gory leans in heavy on the body horror theme. There weren't a lot of games in the 16-bit era that went this far. Bosses explode, including a beating heart at th end of level 4 which splatters blood all over the camera, breaking the 4th wall. Good stuff

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Large sprites and very detailed backgrounds. It doesn't animate very well, but this game has an incredibly distinct and consistent motif.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Decent music which is perfectly attuned to the game's theme. Unfortunately the sound is either completely absent or barely noticeable. A huge missed opportunity. Some ambiance and gruesome, gooey sound effects would've suited this game well.

Overall Score: 64
