Splatterhouse 3

Luigi's Mansion: The Beat-em-Up

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Standard beat-em-up gameplay. Jump, punch, jump kick. Pick up and use the rare weapon which makes your attack even slower. The only gimmick is to gather blue orbs which give you POW. Using it causes you to Hulk up like Bane to increase your attck power. Movement is slow and controls are laggy, but overall it's not bad. I only wish there was more variety in the enemies. Lots of slowdown when several enemies are on screen.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Move from room to room in one floor of a mansion. After clearing all enemies from a room you can choose your next room and can revisit any room you've previously cleared. Reminds me of Smash TV, but the most obvious comparison is to Luigi's Mansion. Same game design. It's pretty cool to be honest.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Same basic premise as Splatterhouse 2, but this one has lower production values. The presentation isn't quite as good. Still a bloody good story.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Much smaller sprites than the previous game. Graphics are detailed and varied. Minimal animation again, but still quite a sight to see. The gore is ttoned down here, surprisingly.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Same story as the previous game - decent music but disappointing sound effects.

Overall Score: 66
