Stunt Race FX for SNES

Stunt Race FX

Star Fox meets F-Zero

Genre: racing - arcade

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Takes a lot of inspiration from F-Zero. There are two difficulty levels called (Classes) with 4 races each. Races are about 2-3 mins long which is about right. Controls are extremely floaty. You spend most of your time correcting after oversteering one way or the other, especially with the fastest vehicles (there are 4 types). The controls are interesting anyway, as you have a limited boost which can be replenished by collecting two canisters per lap and a damage meter which can be fixed as well. There are four racers (probably a technical constraint). The framerate is unbearably low but it's at least consistently bad so you can adjust to it. But man is it awful to look at.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are quite interesting with tons of personality and quirks about them. They have a lot of verticality with ramps and hills all over the place. Animations play like airplanes flying or low poly deer crossing. It's all very interesting to look at. The Stunt Trax and Battle Mode give the game more replayability which is good since there are only 8 tracks in the main racing mode. Unfortunately these extra modes aren't much fun. There's even a Street Fighter esque bonus stage at the midway point of the racing cirtuit but it is a complete waste of time.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

I guess it's cute? Kind of has a Cars vibe to it. The setting screams Nintendo but I'm just not feeling it. I'd much rather play F-Zero or Top Gear tbh

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Low poly graphics that have not aged well at all. Performance is horrendous. The menus and pause screen have far better graphics and artwork than the actual game does. Just, nope

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Overly bouncy music that repeats far too often. I muted this get every chance I got. Sounds effects are ok but the loud music drowns them out.

Overall Score: 46
