Gameplay

There's no weapon upgrades! Well you can make your peashooter more powerful but you never even get a spread shot. The game makes up for it by letting you choose a special weapon that has tons of ammo but can only be used on one stage. Gives the game some strategic depth as well as replayability.
So mostly a boring game but the special weapons are cool to play around with.
Slow movement makes bullet hell sections tough but those are very rare.
Pretty easy game.

Level Design

Large parts of levels are completely empty.
Enemy waves repeat themselves over and over without much variety.
Only a handful of enemy types. It's all very repetitive.
The levels themselves each have a boring background that goes on forever. There are no env hazards, no set pieces, nothing in the background to look at. Booooring

Theme

Aliens are attacking! Same premise as Axelay but man did Axelay nail the intro while this one is really lame.

Art Style

Very simple. The backgrounds are devoid of anything to look at. Sprites are ok but again simple. I like the F-14 sprite.
Goes for a LATA orientation by stealing a bar on the two sides in order to show HUD for P1 and P2.

Audio

Music has a Ninja Gaiden quality to it. The composer really liked percussion. All tracks are full of drums.
Sounds are excellent. I would rate it higher but there's one track that plays on ever other stage that is incredibly repetitive. Brings the whole package down with it
