Sub-Terrania for Genesis

Sub-Terrania

Solar Jetman with a thumping soundtrack

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like Solar Jetman. In other words, it plays horribly. It has less gravity than SJ but it's still basically Moon Lander with a gun, mission objectives, and extremely limited fuel. Enemies take way too many hits to kill. There's no way to know if your hits are doing damage and how much. Just shoot and hope. Enemies have far more maneuverability than you. Very frustrating controls.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Love the objective based missions. I only wish the controls were better. A mission briefing explains all objectives. Reminds me of Desert Strike. Unfortunately you can't check the map or otherwise review the objectives during the mission.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Cool mission briefings and cutscenes introduce the struggle. The underground setting makes me think of Master Blaster but without the cute artwork and settings. This one takes itself more seriously.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Nice animation and explosions and other effects. However it's all very dark and foreboding. Also a million times of brown and grey. Technically great but not appealing.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Amazing tunes. Thumping bass throughout the soundtrack. Great stereo sound as well. Sounds are equally solid. One of the best soundtracks on the Genesis. I love the somber sounds and heavy beats in each track. Songs range from rocking to thoughtful while consistently keeping you bopping your head.

Overall Score: 44
