Super Alfred Chicken for SNES

Super Alfred Chicken

The platformer with a pecker

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Mindscape

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Ok controls. Very floaty but they're made more tolerable, ironically, by the ability to "float" down by pressing the jump button. Feels a bit like Olaf's shield in Lost Vikings, expect that you have to mash. Begin with only the ability to jump (no bop) without any offensive capability. Gain a projectile that bounces in a straight line with no physics, similar to the fireball in Super Mario Land. Also can gain an option-style ball that rotates around you and can hurt enemies. These pickups are lost at the end of each level so you spend most of the game with no attacks. Hit boxes for you and enemies are enormous so prepare to die a lot. Also very hard to differentiate between hazards and background so again, get ready to die.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Not bad. Some interesting elements like an autoscroller hopping between soda cans to avoid a chainsaw as it vertically climbs the stage. Levels aren't labyrinths or endless hallways, so props for that.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Truly bizarre setting. You're a chicken. Enemies are animal/robot hybrids like wind-up mice, submarine-whales, and artillery-snails. The world itself is just a collection of platforms that feels a little like Honey I Shrunk the Kids inside a kid's playroom but with futuristic touches like floating platforms. Lots of wacky designs make for a confusing theme. Plus, you're a chicken. Not a lot of wish fulfillment to be had playing this game.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Tiny sprites. Has that Amiga-look with lots of color but heavy use of shading makes everything look dirty and unappealing. I would've preferred brighter colors. Kind of like the way that Lost Vikings 1 looks better than its sequel.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Truly obnoxious music that loops every 5 seconds. Turn the music off.

Overall Score: 54
