Super Baseball 2020

Unrealized potential

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Lots of novel ideas like purchasable power-ups A tiny home run area and pretty much everywhere else is a fair zone where the ball remains live. Makes it quite easy to get hits. The Fair Zone areas of the outfield are super annoying because the harder you hit the ball the more likely it is to be only a single. Players run slowly. Hard to beat out a single or leg out a double. Controls are otherwise ok. Perhaps the worst thing about the gameplay is that runners WILL NOT advance without your permission. Micromanaging their movement is laborious. The worst thing ever is to bat with the bases loaded. Pitching and hitting are nice and give you ample time to track the ball before you have to swing. Fielding is quite enjoyable except for the crippling slowdown.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Very arcadey. Only one mode - a 15 game season but you'll probably only ever play one game. Only 6 teams.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I love the robot theme. Dripping with atmosphere

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Huge sprites Bright and colorful graphics that are well animated and interesting to look at. Easily the best thing about this game.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Sound and music is far superior to the SNES version. I had to turn them down because they are so grating here.

Overall Score: 48
