Super Battleship for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Super Battleship

At least Classic is playable on this version

Genre: tabletop - board game

Publisher: Mindscape

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Classic Battleship and Super Battleship. The prior is exactly what you'd expect, for better or worse. Incredibly simple with no frills whatsoever. Actually, the one good thing is that you get to fire three shots per turn instead of one which dramatically speeds up the game. Plays a bit faster than the SNES version. The latter is a very lite naval strategy game with horrible controls and no ability to try anything out or back out of a decision. You better not make a false step or you're dead. Not even obvious what each button does.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

There are four scenarios in the Super mode. I beat one of them but was so bored I quit. You take turns moving and then once you're wirhing firing distance you mash to fire until you or the other guy is sunk. Thrilling. The normal Battleship game is exactly what you'd expect and includes four "difficulty" levels which make the computer more or less likely to follow up on hits that they find.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

The naval animations in Super are somewhat interesting. Much less so than the SNES version. Almost makes me want to keep trying.

Art Style Score: 0

Art Style Notes:

Hoo boy are the graphics horrible in this game. Barely better than NES quality.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

If you thought the graphics were bad, wait until you hear the music in this game. So so bad. And the sound effects are few and far between. Bring your own soundrack

Overall Score: 17
