Gameplay

Controls take some getting used to but once you get a hang of it you have so much control over your turns.
No rubber banding. Skill will always win out.
Large field of opponents makes for tense situations.
Just feels great.
Lots of items give the gameplay variety.

Level Design

Battle mode is where it's at. 50CC and 100CC plus four sets of tracks let's you adjust the difficulty and gives you freedom to do what you want.
The tracks are memorable but some are less interesting or even annoying.
I wish there were more Battle courses and that courses had some verticality.

Theme

This was the first game to pull together all Mario characters into a competition. It literally created the genre that SSB continued and everyone else in the industry copied.

Art Style

Yes the mode 7 tracks are pixelated but the characters look lovely and everything about the style is impeccable.

Audio

Classic music tracks. Sounds are also great.
