Super R-Type

Slowdown and sound design

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1991

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Slow gameplay that prioritizes memorization than reaction time. Difficulty comes mostly from one hit kills and having to start the level over after dying. Responsive controls and the best and most iconic weapons in a shooter. Unbearably bad slowdown pulls down the experience.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Excellent.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Typical space shmup with excellent presentation. The opening cutscene sets the mood perfectly.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Everything looks organic. The sprites and levels themselves appear to be alive and breathing Beautiful

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

I used to think the soundtrack was the game's best feature but holy cow the sound design here is top notch. Explosions have the most satisfying crunch to them as do the piercing lasers, the splat of soft tissue enemies, and the pings of metallic projectiles hitting a hard target. Loving care went into the sound effects. The music is good but not as great as I remember it being. It's a bit groovy and hasn't aged well.

Overall Score: 77
