SWAT Kats

Poor man's Mega Man X

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Two characters to choose from - a big bruiser and a smaller more nimble guy. Movement is good but is painfully slow with the bruiser. Very low jump Shoot, jump, and "special". Normal gun has very limited range. Special is a grenade for the big guy and the world's slowest rocketpack for the little guy. Enemies have some annoying patterns like birds that swoop to spots that are difficult for you to hit, or enemies that hug the ground and can only be killed while you're ducking. Birds are jerks issues. Best to avoid enemies as much as possible. Kind of a poor man's Mega Man X.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Levels are mostly fairly empty with only a handful of enemies repeated over and over again. Uninspired to say the least, but at least the levels are linear and don't require a bunch of collecting to open the exit. Some interesting elements like a Mode 7 dive into a monster while piloting an airplane or an autoscroller with the Sarlac Monster chasing you up the screen.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

I guess it's based on a cartoon that I had never heard of. Looks like a TMNT wannabe.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Disappointing. This came out in 1995 but looks like a 1992 game. Very sparse, uninteresting backgrounds and small, undetailed sprites. No interesting effects.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Not bad, but nothing to rave about.

Overall Score: 60
