Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Yes, it's missing the most satisfying throw move ever in a brawler, but otherwise the gameplay is all here. Lots of fun as a 2P game. Very clear indicator of when you will earn another life (kill counter). The kill counter makes it legitimately fun to compete with another player "hey that was my kill!" Very easy difficulty, especially in 2P. This is welcome since 1) it's a kids game and 2) it means you get to see as much of the game as you want on each playthrough. Very responsive controls. Repetitive gameplay, but that's par for the course with these games isn't it?

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Only 5 levels (SNES had 10) but these are longer and often combine elements from two or three levels from the SNES and arcade versions. I prefer the shorter levels but that's a small gripe. Design is still about as good as it gets with a brawler. Environmental hazards are plentiful and give each level a distinct feel.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Bosses stop the action to introduce themselves. Fun little details create a lot of character. Matches the show very well in terms of tone, visuals, and sound.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Wonderful animation. Each level has a distinct look with lots of details in the backgrounds. Colors are

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Same soundtrack as TMNT IV on SNES albeit a bit faster. Unfortunately the voice samples are either absent or horrible quality. This was one of the more memorable features of the SNES game so it's dissapointing to say the least.
