Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure for Genesis
Review #4610
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure
Mix of Mario and Sonic
Gameplay
Sonic-style controls and movement. Just a jump button so only attack is to bop enemies. More understandable than the SNES game.
Momentum-based movement, but starting is responsive. You simply get faster the longer you hold down.
The jump is WEIRD. If you let go before reaching the apex of your leap your character snaps back to the ground as if pulled by a rubberband. Not bad but unlike any other game I can remember. It takes some getting use to. Very strange physics.
50% draw distance. Not terrible but I wish I had slightly more when running fast.
A few interesting features like tight ropes but for the most part you just move and jump so it feels familiar and not unique.
Level Design
Good combination of Mario (platforms, pits, well-placed enemies, collect 100 carrots to earn a life) and Sonic (slopes, long stretches to run fast, catapults to gain speed quickly, springs to launch upward) level design principles.
Objective is to simply get to the far right. Multiple "levels" on each stage let you take the high road with floating platforms, low road with endless pits and grounded enemies, or middle road with a mix of platforms and enemies.
Theme
Tiny Toons is great. But the other characters don't make much of an appearance. I wish there was a bit more representation from the rest of the crew.
Art Style
Simple, cute, attractive. Not the most technically impressive Genesis game but it looks and moves very well.
Audio
Some great music and others that get on my nerves. Each level seems to have a different track which is nice.
Nice sounds that fit the theme and license well.
