ToeJam & Earl for Genesis

ToeJam & Earl

Funky, experimental, random

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Forgive me, but I've never understood this game. The objective is to gather pieces of your broken ship while avoiding humans as they wander around floating platforms. As near as I can tell the entire game is random. You find boxes that can contain anything from a useful item to the spare part from your ship or something that will hurt you. Every playthrough is different so again the game comes down to luck and not skill. Movement is extremely laggy and slow. Controls are horrible in my opinion. Again, I'm not sure what the draw is here. It's an interesting experiment but not a game that I would play.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Early example of procedurally generated levels. No design means bad design. The levels all look the same. It's a black backdrop with an overhead view of a green island. Scattered across this island are presents that you can open which give you random items. Again, it's unique.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

This came out in the age of Ren and Stimpy and Pauly Shore. You play as two stoner dudes who happen to be aliens. It's silly but very '90s.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The highlight of this game are the character designs and sprites. The animations are excellent, albeit with very low frame rate.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Music has a funky beat. Another highlight of this game
