Tommy Lasorda Baseball

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Uses a top-down view when fielding. Very slow movement. Basically impossible to hit the ball hard. I'd say 95% of the time the ball stays in the infield. I've tested it with save states and almost never got a ball into the outfield and never once it got a base hit into the outfield. In fact the outcome was fixed no matter where I positioned myself within the batting box. It's like the game has determined where the ball is going to go before the pitch is thrown. The AI is stupid. Fielders don't run after you and they throw to the wrong base frequently. The worst part of the gameplay is taking a lead off of the base. You have to hold down on B and hold the d-pad for about 4 seconds to take a lead. And you have to do this for each runner and after every single pitch. You generally don't even have enough time to move your runner in order to attempt a steal. And you certainly don't have time to move two or three runners concurrently. This alone makes the game incredibly frustrating.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Only exhibition

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

No MLB or MLPBA. Feels like a generic baseball title. Licensed by one of the last attractive dudes to ever coach. Sorry Tommy.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Well batting every hitter is the same sprite and it's a chubby guy who looks like Bartolo Colon. When Fielding all the players are just a circle for head on top of a larger circle to represent their body. Very simple graphics.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

There's an annoying song that plays constantly which you can disable. An interesting feature is the when the balls hit an announcer tells you which field or the ball is going toward. Pretty cool actually
