Toxic Crusaders for Genesis
Review #4622
Toxic Crusaders
Mop up that toxic waste right NOW young man!
Gameplay
Two attacks which do the same thing.
Tons of pickups that do nothing or sometimes give you special attacks. You're given no indication that you've picked something up or how much ammo you have. Enemies sometimes die in a pile of goo and if you stand on this puddle you mop it up. I believe this is optional so I'm not sure why it is included. The entire game feels completely random.
Very fast movement.
Poor hit detection.
Most enemies fire projectiles which stun and lock you in place for extra damage. Getting hit once more often than not leaves to instant death. The choppers and bosses are especially good at stun locking you to death.
No health pickups, even on Easy difficulty.
Level Design
Go to the right. There's an occasional environmental hazard such as a series of water pools which are instant death. In level two these pools cover nearly the entire arena and are angled in such a way that the only way to pass them is a narrow horizontal path in the middle of the screen.
Otherwise these are boring, lazy levels.
Theme
Cut from the same cloth as Boogerman, Ren & Stimpy, and Garbage Pail Kids. Even as a kid I wasn't into the whole gross-out fad.
I'm guessing this is based on a comic book. Maybe it was a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon? Either way, you're a green mutant with a mop out to clean up goo. Or something.
Art Style
Everything about this game's graphics is reminiscent of Toe Jam & Earl. The character models are smaller but have that cartooney, rounded, colorful, alien quality to them. The backgrounds lack detail, however.
Lots of animation
Audio
The sound also has a derpy Toe Jam & Earl vibe. The music is more of a repeating beat than an actual song. Sounds are alright, if generic.
