Trampoline Terror! for Genesis

Trampoline Terror!

Poor man's Bomberman

Genre: puzzle - overhead

Publisher: DreamWorks

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like those shrinking tile levels from Super Mario Galaxy. Your objective is to walk over all of the tiles to cause them to explode. There are other tiles which don't explode. Many of these are trampolines which can be jumped on a given number of times before they too disappear. You can trampoline off them to jump over enemies or just bounce around. It also reminds me of Jack Bros for the Virtual Boy, although that might be an even more obscure game than this one. In terms of gameplay, it's pretty light. Just walk around and avoid enemies who are all pretty easy to avoid.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The levels are just kind of there. They don't teach you how to play or allow you to discover and master new capabilities. After completing a level I often thought, "that's it?" I guess the level design just feels underwhelming. Not terrible, but again, just...there.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You're a cute chibi style character being chased by huge insects and spinning tops. It's your typical Japanese themed title, which I'm discovering is a rarity in the early days of the Genesis. In fact the best way to describe the theme is that's it's a quirky TG-16 game that somehow made it to the Genesis.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Again it's a cute and colorful world. Sprites animate well and are attractive. The use of color is somewhat confusing as sometimes colors indicate the properties of a tile, such as the trampolines which have three, two, or one jump left if they are colored red, green, or blue, respectively. Other times color had no meaning such as the exploding tiles which come in a variety of colors but all explode a second after being touched.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Cute music that would be at home in Bonk or some other TG-16 game.

Overall Score: 45
