Ultimate Fighter for SNES

Ultimate Fighter

False advertising

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: CultureBrain

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

A truly strange mashup of the most basic 2D brawler with some very light turn based RPG battles. The closest analog that I can think of for the brawler levels is China Warrior for the TG-16. They're strictly a one button affair - just go right and kick everybody. 30% draw distance issues When you encounter a boss it becomes a turn based RPG battles complete with hit points being announced. Very strange. And you are asked each time if you want the game to auto play these battles which is even weirder. Includes a 1v1 mode but it's so awful that I'm counting this as a Beat em Up instead. The controls are just atrocious with some of the worst hit detection I've ever seen.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The game has variety. There's only one character but the various modes make it a bit of a curiosity. At least it's memorable which is more than I can say for a lot of these brawlers and 1v1 fighters.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Dunno what the story is but it's not a bad vibe. I laughed out loud the first time I saw the Ultraman style transformation during one of the boss fights. Unintendedly hilarious stuff

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Truly horrendous framerate Sprites are huge and are well drawn but the character models are painfully boring. All enemies are just pallette swaps. Worst reuse since the Foot Clan
