Ultima: Runes of Virtue II

The Legend of Monty Python: Ultima's Awakening

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: FCI

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like a 2D Zelda game. Enemies take a lot of hits. Well, some do. Some die in one hit while others take 10. Your weapons are incredibly slow so the best strategy is to keep a distance and throw your projectiles from long distance. Very slow and imprecise gameplay. Pretty poor controls, all things considered. 8 direction movement and attacks are theoretically possible but it's so difficult to execute that it may as well not be there.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There's an overworld and dungeons and towns like an RPG although they play exactly the same with enemies and all. Makes you wonder why the overworld even exists at all. The dungeons are just a linear maze with very narrow corridors to navigate. Enemies fill the hallways so you can't really avoid much. Better level design would have made this game so much better that it turned out.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

OK props for surprising me. I was expecting a typical Western, faceless RPG and instead got a sarcastic, silly British comedy. Despite the bad controls and weak level design I want to continue playing to see what hijinks are afoot.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Horrible framerate. Animation is too good a word for the slideshow being presented here. The view is from above but tilted at a slightly down-and-to-the-right angle as if it wanted to be isometric but changed its mind at the last minute. I feel like my head is tilted or something. Very strange. character models are very cartoony and flat looking. The graphics are almost so bad they're good. They look like nothing else I've seen on the SNES so I can't look away.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Again, a lot of silliness going on here. For example, the game was silent until I walked up to a piano and it started playing a weird song. There are virtually no sound effects but the goofy songs make up for it.
