Ultima VII: The Black Gate for SNES

Ultima VII: The Black Gate

Lord Britain's Zelda clone

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: FCI

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like Zelda. I thought the other Ultima game was a fluke but I guess they're all Zelda clones. Weird overhead/isometric view makes movement and combat very awkward. Very hard to line yourself up to attack or interact with doors, NPCs, and containers. Everything one hit kills you. So annoying and embarrassing to get killed by a rat. Took me a while to figure out what to do but after talking to the right NPC I was sent on a linear mission that acted as a tutorial. I could definitely see playing this all the way thru. Good controls despite the awful perspective. Just press Y to interact with most things although inventory management is a big problem. Overall much better than most Western RPG/adventure games. Combat is clunky.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Well designed town. The buildings have distinct features like a unique plant growing outside. This helps you find your way around.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Generic medieval setting. Didn't do much for me but not offensive.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

I hate the almost isometric perspective. The artwork is atrocious tbh. Especially compared to the likes of Zelda or Secret of Mana.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Unmemorable

Overall Score: 58
