Ultimate Qix for Genesis

Ultimate Qix

I remember this being better

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Standard Qix gameplay. Press a button to leave the outside and draw a line. Goal is to close off 75% of the screen. Enemies bounce around and kill you if they hit your incomplete line. You can pick up powerups by boxing in these crystals which come and go. They disappear so quickly that you can rarely get them. They're all useless other than the S that uses your speed.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Incredibly challenging, even on easy mode. Good luck getting past even 2 or 3 levels. Every level is identical. There's zero variety. Way less interesting than the levels in Cacoma for SNES.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Super cool shmup motif. I want this game to be better

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely sprites and enemy designs. Even the backgrounds look nice.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

A strobing alarm sound plays constantly as you play. What. The. Heck? It's like sitting next to a fire alarm. It's unbearable and a real shame because the sound effects are great. Music in the intro and title screen are also appealing so having to mute this game is a real disappointment.

Overall Score: 47
