Valis III

Duo Sailor Moon

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Renovation Products

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like the other Valis games. All the same warts. Slow movement, difficult platforming, poor hit detection, short draw distance, etc. They lean in heavily on copying Castlevania games. There are two playable characters in the new one uses a whip like a Belmont. The second level even has a ferryman sequence similar to Castlevania 2.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Much better level design than the other two Valis games. There's some vertical sequences and just more variety in the levels.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Almost identical to the previous game but The addition of a second player gives the game a little more character.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Greatly improved visuals, especially in the backgrounds. Lots of parallax scrolling and well drawn stuff back there. The sprites have better animation but not great and the enemies are still fairly generic and uninteresting.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is much better than the other games, but that's not saying much. It's still not very good at least most of it. Anyway. A few of the tracks are fun to listen to and the sound effects are decent.

Overall Score: 50
