Viewpoint for Genesis

Viewpoint

Play it on Neo Geo instead

Genre: shooter - isometric

Publisher: Sammy

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

I've never liked the isometric view for most games but a twitch shooter is the worst genre for this viewpoint. Pun intended. It's so difficult to figure out where you are in relation to enemies and bullets. Movement is slow and there are no powerups or does boosts. Ultimately that's the biggest problem - the game is just so simplistic. Actually the biggest problem is slowdown. This game makes Gradius 3 look like a high performance sports car by comparison. In the SNES shooters slowdown happened when a lot was happening on screen. In Viewpoint it pretty much never stops.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels themselves are quite interesting to look at. And that's what you do most of the time. They're are long breaks with Nothing happening and many waves of enemies that pose no threat to you. The enemies and obstacles are memorable though so this game sticks in your brain.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

R-Type clone. Tell me if this sounds familiar: The one and only powerup you get is a set of options. You charge up your shot or have to mash otherwise. The world has an techno organic feel to it. So yeah, it's an isometric R-Type.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

It looks amazing although the colors are muted compared to the arcade or Neo Geo versions and again, the slowdown is unbearable. But the artwork is incredible.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Viewpoint's soundtrack is...interesting. Each track has lyrics. It makes the game memorable butt doesn't match the game's theme.

Overall Score: 53
