Warsong for Genesis

Warsong

aka Der Langrisser

Genre: strategy - turn-based tactics

Publisher: Treco

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays more like a modern tactics game than other Genesis games in this genre. Each unit moves independently and you move all your units before ending your phase and starting the enemy phase. Also, the defending unit counterattacks during an assault, unlike Shining Force. Battle outcomes are wildly random. Using save states I found that damage taken or received can vary by up to 50%. Healing is strange as there are no items. Only the commander can heal (Treat) which restores 3-4 health for themselves and any units adjacent to them. There are two types of units - commanders and pawns, for lack of a better term. Each unit belongs to a commander and follows him or her around the map. They're only powerful enough to attack other pawns so they're kind of useless, pointless features. They do little more than make battles take 4x as long. Very stupid AI.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Levels are about what you'd expect, but they're stacked against you. Enemy armies are far more numerous than yours and can only be dealt with using a very specific strategy. Once you know the way, you have to use it.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Anime style and character designs. Clearly inspired by Fire Emblem.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Attractive artwork throughout, though not as cartoony as Shining Force. Dark color palette. Quick, fun animations.
