Whip Rush
Snail spaceshipGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Renovation Products
Year: 1990
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Weird hitbox. Your sprite is enormous but the back half is seemingly impervious. Three weapons and two options can be picked up. Taking a hit eliminates power-ups. Adjust speed with 8 settings! 3 would be fine, thank you
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Long stretches of nothing or next to nothing. Poor pacing. A few fun ideas like taking a trip underwater but the planet-bound levels don't make sense according to the narrative.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Aliens are attacking the solar system. So you fly a bubble craft on Earth and in tunnels to shoot little spacecraft. Uh ok. Your dumb looking sprite runs the premise entirely. It's generic to be sure but it's hard to take it seriously given your spacecraft.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Quite possibly the worst main character design ever in a shooter. Is it a Mouser from TMNT? A snail with a small blue shell crawling up a scuba diver's face? Whatever it is it's hideous. Graphics lack detail like many early Genesis games. Some nice animations in the background gives the game some graphical flair.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Music is quiet and uses the same sound over and over. Sounds are too loud. I muted it completely midway thru level 2.
Overall Score: 38
