X-Perts

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Deep Water

Year: 1996

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

The gameplay is a bit like Batman Forever or Mortal Kombat. You lumber around slowly without the ability to run or jump. There's a tiny depth like in a beat-em-up, but enemies can hit you and you can hit enemies on any plane so long as you're horizontally next to them. So I'm not sure what the point of the depth is. As you might expect, you can punch and kick. You can also take out a machine gun by pressing the punch and kick buttons together, but you can't move while shooting. The whole experience feels like you're driving a tank..

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Incoherent design. No idea how I'm supposed to do to achieve the primary and secondary mission objectives. I think they're going for a GoldenEye type of objectives based design, but given the controls I have no idea what to do. The first objective is to flush station airlocks but I can't interact with any thing other than punching bad guys.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

I'm not sure what the theme really is other than espionage with bad guys trying to steal technology. It feels a little bit like a futuristic Mission Impossible. Whatever it is, it's completely forgettable and the “X-“ in the title is straight up 90s cringe.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Hi, this might be the final form of pre-rendered Sega Genesis games. Your character looks like Dolph lundgren and his knuckles drag on the ground like these Donkey Kong. The enemies are masked uniformed guys. That wouldn't be out of place in a Power Rangers episode. The backgrounds are quite impressive with subtle layers of parallax scrolling giving them a 3D look to them. Very impressive. The sprites are huge and animate well. These are a huge step up from stuff like Time Cop or Stargate. I'm just not a fan of the pre-rendered look. So yeah, this is yet another technically impressive but not very attractive graphical game.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music if you can call it. That is just a hum. I think they were going for something atmospheric but it's just white noise. The sounds are loud but the voice samples of enemies dying or the computer telling you about your next objective are very high quality. So the quality of the sound is good, but the sound design itself is boring.
