Young Merlin for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Young Merlin

Silly, simple, and just a bit tedious

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Virgin

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Simple puzzles block your every move. Clear one obstacle and then figure out the next one. Unclear what can be attacked vs what is just a puzzle obstacle. For example, some enemies can be killed if temporarily, but others won't move until you find and use an item. Feels like one of those PC games you played in elementary computer lab. Controls are responsive but the there isn't much to do with them.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Again, just a series of simple puzzles. Gets old quickly.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

No idea what the objective is. The next thing to do is shown you through some pantomime which is generally humorous. Silly setting. Gnomes curse at you and enemies fling you around.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Very simple graphics. Again, looks like a DOS game with only a few colors onscreen at once.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Chirpy simple music. Some funny sounds like the gnomes yelling. But still, this is bad sound design.

Overall Score: 39
