Zoom! for Genesis

Zoom!

Genre: puzzle - overhead

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It's a mix of Qix, Dig Dig, and Q*Bert. Guide your orange guy over lines to fully sleeping every time on the screen. Unfortunately the controls are laggy and imprecise so he doesn't go where you want him to go. The perspective is highly skewed so it's very difficult to get the tiles at the back of the screen. Enemies swarm toward you and you can't stop moving so it's a cat and mouse game of perpetually avoiding them. It's fun for a while. Not an awesome game by any stretch but fun for a quick game like so many of those 80s single screen action puzzle games

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Difficulty varies greatly from level to level. 2 was much harder than 3, for example. And there aren't any tutorial like levels. It just drops you into the game.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Cute 80s arcade motif. There's a lengthy animation between levels that drags out for way too long.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The sprites are cute and all but this is a very simple looking game. The one problem is that there is a very slight difference between complete and incomplete titles and drawn and undrawn lines. I wish the color differences were far more contrasting so I could see at a glance where I need to go next.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Cute repetitive music. Nothing to rival Bubble Bobble, but it's enjoayble. Some silly sounds play when you complete a tile or pick up items. Good stuff
