Accele Brid for SFC

Accele Brid

Not even good as a tech demo

Genre: shooter - corridor

Publisher: Tomy

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Some of the worst corridor gameplay imaginable. Enemies scale in so badly that it's impossible to gauge distance and therefore to aim at and hit them. Most are flying but you're grounded so you have to jump and shoot at just the right moment. You don't jump high enough to hit everything and enemies disappear too quickly to hit many of them anyway. Your main weapon is weak and takes too many hits to kill anything, plus both your primary and secondary weapons run out of ammo after only a single burst of shots, leaving you with a long cool down period where you can only first a single shot every second or two. I could forgive either the poor movement or the weapon issues, but the combination of these kneecaps the whole experience.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

The first level has a winding corridor which looks interesting, but the other levels have no visual appeal and are just a boring straight-ahead affair.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

For all the gameplay faults, the setting is fairly interesting. You begin as a racer complete with a first level that's a race. However, space terrorists attack, kidnap your team owner, and turn this into a free-the-hostage story. Kinda cool. Oh and the futuristic setting and mechs make this even better. It's a fun mix of F-Zero, Battle Clash, and Gundam.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The background is a low-rez mess, but the sprites aren't bad. The menus, HUD, and cutscenes are fun and are well drawn. So, it's a mixed bag.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nice tunes and ok sounds

Overall Score: 33
