Alcahest for SFC
Review #2005
Alcahest
Tall Zelda
Gameplay
Nice movement, however fighting enemies directly below you is awkward because your sprites is huge and your reach is short and only straight forward. This is mitigated at times by weapon upgrades that tend to expire quickly. It mostly feels good but doesn't stand out when compared to the best games in the genre. New mechanics are introduced frequently, keeping things fresh. The only real downsides are the infinitely respawning enemies and the lack of a map.
Level Design
The lack of a map really hurts, but the levels otherwise suffer from some unintuitive structure. Some fun but strange mechanics like like jump pads allow movement between segmented sections. These become like a maze and lead to a lot of getting lost.
Theme
Typical chosen one storyline, but the evil bad guys and whatnot are great. You're a silent protagonist.
Art Style
Tall, lanky sprites that remind me of Light Crusader or Ultima, but with a little more color. The backgrounds look ok, with again the colors being the best feature.
Audio
The music is quiet and unremarkable.
