Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes

Ooh I love the swinging! Everything else, not so much.

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Epoch Co.

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Some of the laggyst controls I've ever experienced. Press one direction or the other and it's a good second or more before you start moving that way. I hate it when developers prioritize the animation over the movement. That being said, the swinging movement is a joy. It's not interactive, mind you but jump.and then hold down on the R or L button and you'll swing like Tarzan across the screen until you hit a barrier. It's great. Combat is as awkward as could be. You have a jump kick that makes you fall at a 45° angle towards the ground. So it's actually very difficult to hit enemies who fly up in the air. Naturally most enemies do. While on the ground you can punch or shoot webbing but the webbing takes off almost no energy so it's basically useless. There are actually very few enemies anyway, and on the easy setting you'll never run low on health. Overall, the gameplay is poor but surprisingly fun because of the levels and the swinging movement.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are about what you'd expect. Jumping from rooftop to rooftop and running into walls. You can't go up a wall if there's any sort of ledge on it, which of course happens frequently. The awkward controls make this a significant complaint. Level two is a fairly linear maze where your movement is extremely constrained.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

They do a great job at presenting Spider-Man and his his major villains, plus other Marvel superheroes. You frequently run into these characters and cutscenes ensue. The cutscenes remind me of Comix Zone.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Fantastic sprites. The look and feel are comics worthy and again remind me of Comix Zone, although with slightly worst animation.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Really terrible music. That sounds like it was ripped from an early '80s action TV show. The voices though are truly awful. I've heard that Spider-Man was big in Japan in the '80s and some of these sound effects have to have been lifted from those cartoons and shows that they had. They're laughable. The sound effects honestly are terrible as well.

Overall Score: 49
