Araiguma Rascal for SFC

Image: MobyGames

Araiguma Rascal

Puyo Puyo Racoon

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Masaya

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Match three going vertically or horizontally (not diagonally). Controls are incredibly awkward. You move blocks by picking up and moving them like Wario's Woods. Your movement is terribly slow and the motion to pick up and drop blocks is similarly labored. I'd describe it as Prince of Persia meets Wario's Woods. Oddly, blocks load from the right side of the screen rather than the top. The playable area only fills the top 60% of the screen. The rest is fillwed with an enormous HUD. It's two player which would probably make this more fun.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Three modes: Normal = endless Versus = duh Course = an awkward race to the end with some blocks in the way

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Cute. Is the main character Rascal from an anime? An opening cinematic gives a short story of a boy and his pet racoon.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Sickeningly pastel artwork. Looks like a Kirby game. Your character is beautifully animated (to a fault) but that's the extent of this game's visual flair.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The song is straight out of a hoedown. Get out your jug band and play along. Or turn it off after a couple of minutes.

Overall Score: 43
